addictionWe know a lot about the progression of symptoms to full-blown addiction.
You may use more (substance or behavior) than you did previously hoping to get the same effect. And it’s not working. You may have tried unsuccessfully to cut down. Use may be affecting your relationships, your work, the way you feel about yourself. You may be mystified as to why you keep doing this despite the consequences and your promises to yourself. It is my belief and experience that this is physical, emotional, and spiritual illness and that the essential solutions must be as well. The physiology has historically largely been ignored. I support focus on and investigation into the physiological. I’m invested in people healing fully. I think having (one or more of) these diseases is as innocent as having cancer. It is not your fault; it is your responsibility. I’m a fan of 12-Step programs because I’ve seen them work for a diverse and varied population. You needn’t agree, but an open mind is a good thing. There are two qualities that increase your odds of success: honesty with yourself and someone else, and determined, dogged persistence. There is no such thing as a hopeless case. Recovery is available to everyone, no matter the story. Everyone. |
